Blood pressure and cardiac rehabilitation guidelines

High blood pressure Exeter Devon

• Lower CHD risk profile
• Lower BP
• Increase CV based PA
• Reduce stress
• Reduce body fat
• Reduce smoking
• Increase caloric expenditure
• Get advice on healthy eating.

Modes

Aerobic

• Large muscle group activity: Walking, cycling
• Leading on to: Cross training, rowing, stepping, group based aerobics, swimming

Resistance

• Circuit training


Contraindications

• SBP>180 mmHg or DBP > 110 mmHg
• Overhead resistance exercise
• Valsalva maneuvre (holding your breath and staining)
Isometric contractions (pushing a weight without it moving)
• Do not use resistance as only form of exercise

Frequency

Aerobic

• 3-7 days a week not early morning

Resistance

• 2-3 days a week not early morning

Duration

Aerobic

• 30-60 minutes session; continuous exercise if possible.

Resistance

• 10-15 reps; 1-3 circuits

Intensity

Aerobic

• Low to moderate
• ObservationTalk test
• RPE (dependant on medication)
• HR (dependant on medication)
• METs

Resistance

• Low to moderate

Progression

• Duration, frequency, mode/ intensity

Comments

Aerobic exercise at 40-70% MHR (or equivalent) for best results
